HISTORY AND CULTURE
The last Mediterranean paradise. Formentera is known as the last Mediterranean paradise because it has been able to combine tourism with environment protection. The struggle of formentera´s various generations has made possible the island conservation, which beaches, transparent waters and climate turn it into a small Mediterranean jewel.
You can arrive to Formentera only by boat from Ibiza. This inaccessibility turns it into a quiet place, where you can escape from stress and overcrowding. You can enjoy the island cycling or swimming from its more than 20 km of white sandy beaches and infinitely transparent water, where you can practice all kinds of water sports. The secret of the crystalline sea existence and Formentera´s long beaches, which mark it out from the rest of the Mediterranean, is the posidonian meadow that surrounds the island, and a natural purifying, that filter the water and makes possible the sand sedimentation on the coast. It is a real submarine jungle, declared a World Heritage by UNESCO in 1999.
SHOPPING
In spite of the small size of the island, Formentera is one of the best places to go shopping. It doesn’t have large commercial avenues of the peninsular capital, not even (fortunately) any franchise was set up in the island. But there is a great range of establishments, where you can find unique, original, and high-quality garments, which you will never see in any other place. First of all, it is worth noting Sant Francesc, the island capital, it is a place of the most beautiful and special shops. The village is really small, so it means that you can go all over the island, up and down, without getting tired and discovering the shops that most suit you.
NIGHTLIFE
Nightlife in Formentera might seem very reserved. The majority of night spot centres are situated in Els Pujols and el Puerto el La Savina. The Formentera´s nights are usually an extension of the peaceful days.
To spend a night in Formentera generally means to have a dinner in a nice atmosphere, admiring beautiful beaches and spectacular sea. The best thing which you can do in the sunset time is to relax and enjoy a refreshing drink; you will see a stunning sun, obtaining bright rose and orange tonalities. Enter this marvelous place, where you will admire the sunset of the tiny Pitiusa island, you will enjoy the views which you have never seen before.
SPORT
When we talk about Formentera and link it to sport, it is absolutely essential to talk about summer. A lot of different sports can be practiced both in summer and winter, but, undoubtedly, water sports play the most important role.
Navigation and diving
Formentera has magnificent coastlines and incredible beaches, average winds, pleasant and mild temperatures all year round, which make the island a paradisiac place to enjoy a wide range of water sports.
Kitesurfing
The relationship between Formentera and kitesurf is bit by bit closer. The kitesurfing´s prominence in Pitiusa increases day by day.
Windsurf
Formentera has the most beautiful Sandy beaches, picturesque coasts and flat entrances into the sea. Hardly someone knows it. At the Migjorn, for example, there might be really good waves. There are waves with southern winds, breaking against the rock reefs. Formentera presents Windsurfers a Caribbean flair in the Mediterranean!
Hiking and biking
Formentera with its 82-km surface area, is an ideal place for walking and cycling. One of Formentera´s greatest attractions is the existence of ancient track nets, meant for visiting on foot or by bicycle.
MARINAS
La Sabina Port is a home of two yachting harbours, which accommodate some three hundred moorings between them: "Marina de Formentera" y "Formentera Mar".
RESTORATION
Gastronomy in Formentera means Mediterranean cuisine and fresh fish. Fish is the main character no matter in which way it is cooked: grilled, broiled or as part of a bullit, a guisat (various fish stews) or as an essential part of the paella.
Other typical dishes are peasant salad (salad with dried fish), arroz de matanzas or sofrito payés.
You should also try other national dishes such as figs (fresh or dried), goat cheese, the peix sec (sun dried fish, used in salads) and ibicencan sausages as sobrassada and botifarró or delicious desserts like flaó and orelletes.
And don't forget to accompany it all with a payés wine (typical wine)!
Formentera restaurant challenge the most delicate palates with the quality of the ingredients and the care of the cooks, without overlooking the locations and views of the restaurants that will leave everyone open-mouthed.
In this section we show some of the best restaurants on the island, which not to be missed.
In La Sabina restaurant Bellavista offers calderetas” Arroces” and “Pescado fresco”. In Illetes de Formentera, we will have lunch in Es Ministre with specialties such as la Fideua and the fish Guisado. We can also enjoy the grilled meet as well as fish in Es Pujols in S’Avaradero restaurant. Anyway we can find some beach bars where to enjoy unforgettable moments in fantastic atmosphere.
